AN EXCITING EXPEDITION
GREAT EGRET WITH VOLE by Beth Davidow
BLUE WINGED TEAL (female) by Laine Causey
I recently had the opportunity to spend a week with a longtime friend, Beth Davidow as she was passing through the PNW, and to actually watch her at work.
We spent time at one of the coolest national wildlife refuges, photographing birds and landscape. Mostly, Beth was instructing me on how to successfully shoot action shots, something I’ve never done. I happened to have a 100m-600m lens that almost fit the bill, but it isn’t the “fast” version, and thus half of my shots weren’t pin sharp like hers. Examples:
Beth is using a Canon mirrorless model these days, with a 100m-500m sport lens. I was on my trusty Nikon D850. I learned so much, including that I should stick to landscape/nature photography. It was an honor for me to have her share her experience and wisdom with a hack like me because Beth is a member of the famous Explorers Club, and also serves as a (certified) Naturalist for one of the major cruise lines. In case you aren’t familiar, the Explorers Club was “founded in 1904 for the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space, and was the first to both poles, the summit of Everest and the Moon.” The hq is based in NYC.
Beth and her partner, Tom, also lead annual diving expeditions as well as travel the high seas together in their private M/Y. You can follow Beth on facebook and instagram. Thanks for a wonderful and memorable week, Beth!
